Calorie counts

How many calories in biryani?

500–750 kcal

A restaurant plate of chicken biryani is usually 500–750 calories. It is one of the hardest dishes to estimate because the rice is cooked in fat before it is layered, and the serving size varies enormously.

By serving

Serving by serving.

Ranges rather than single numbers. Home cooking has no standard serving, and the same dish made in two kitchens genuinely differs by this much — a single figure would be false precision.

ServingCalories
1 restaurant plate, chicken (~300 g)500–750
1 plate, vegetable400–600
1 katori, home-made (~150 g)230–350
Per 100 g160–210

Per one restaurant plate of chicken biryani: 20–30 g protein · 60–80 g carbs · 15–28 g fat

Why the range

What moves this number.

If you want a better estimate than the table gives, these are the things worth paying attention to. Everything else is noise by comparison.

  • The plate size. A “full” biryani at a restaurant can be twice a “half”, and both are described the same way once you are eating.
  • Ghee and oil in the rice. Biryani rice is fried before layering. This is invisible on the plate and worth 150–300 calories on a full portion.
  • Meat and bone. Bone-in chicken looks like more food than it is; the edible weight can be a third lower than the served weight.
  • What comes with it. Raita adds 60–120, salan another 80–150. They are usually forgotten entirely.

Logging it

You do not need this table every day.

Looking a number up works once. Doing it for every item of every meal is the reason most people stop tracking within a fortnight.

BetterCal has no database to search. Say or type the meal the way you would describe it to a person — "biryani and dal" — and it is logged with calories and macros in one go. If your version differs from the estimate, correct it once and it remembers, so over a few weeks the numbers converge on your kitchen rather than an average of everyone else's.

Frequently asked questions

How many calories in a plate of chicken biryani?

Around 500–750 for a typical restaurant plate. Home-made biryani made with a measured amount of oil is often nearer 350–500 for the same volume.

Is vegetable biryani lower in calories?

Slightly, and less than people expect. It loses the meat's protein but keeps the fried rice, so the saving is usually 100–150 calories rather than half.

How do I log biryani without weighing it?

Describe it the way you would to a person — “half plate chicken biryani with raita”. BetterCal estimates against how the dish is actually served rather than making you find a database entry.

Why is this a range and not one number?

Because the honest answer is a range. Serving sizes are not standardised and cooking fat varies enormously between kitchens. A single confident figure would be more convenient and less true. See how accurate calorie estimates really are.

Do I need to weigh food to track it properly?

No. Weighing improves precision that you mostly do not need — being consistently within 10% is enough to lose or gain weight predictably. The easiest way to track calories covers the method.
