Free to download. Free to actually use.
Plenty of apps are “free” until the part you need is behind a paywall. BetterCal gives you 20 AI meal logs every day at no cost — and once a meal is in your memory, logging it again is free forever.

What you get without paying
- 20 AI logs a day. Enough for a full day of new meals, several times over.
- Unlimited repeat logging. Saved meals and anything already in your food memory never cost a credit, however often you log them.
- Voice and text logging. Both input methods, not one free and one paid.
- Calorie and macro targets. Your plan is calculated during setup from your height, weight, activity and goal.
- Weight and streak tracking. Trend line included.
- Apple Health and Health Connect sync. Steps and active calories, no charge.
- Daily AI insights. The home-screen coaching is not credit-limited.
How Cal Credits work
A Cal Credit is spent only when the AI has to do genuinely new work.
| Action | Costs a credit? |
|---|---|
| Logging a food the AI has not seen from you before | Yes — one |
| A voice recording, however many dishes it contains | Yes — one |
| Logging a saved meal again | No |
| Logging a food already in your memory | No |
| Changing a quantity | No |
| Renaming an entry | No |
| Daily insights on the home screen | No |
The practical effect is that credits get harder to spend the longer you use the app. Most people eat a fairly small set of meals on rotation, and after the first week or two the majority of logging is repeats — which are free.
Credits reset every day. Running out means waiting until tomorrow for brand-new foods, not losing access to the app.
Why this is not the usual free tier
The common pattern in this category is to make the fast path paid: barcode scanning, voice input or AI logging behind a subscription, with a manual database search left free. That gets the numbers into the app while making the experience tedious enough that you eventually pay to stop being annoyed.
BetterCal is the other way round. The fast path is the free path, because the fast path is the entire product. There is no slower manual mode to fall back on, and no version of the app where you search a database item by item.
Will there be a paid plan?
Likely, eventually — for people who want more than 20 new foods a day. What is written on this page is what is free today, and the free daily allowance is not something we intend to remove. If pricing changes, this page changes with it.
Frequently asked questions
Is BetterCal free forever?
The app is free to download and free to use every day within the daily allowance of 20 AI logs, and repeat meals are always free. A paid tier for heavier use may be added later; the free daily allowance is intended to stay.
Do I need a card to sign up?
No. You sign in with Apple or Google and start logging. There is no card and no trial to cancel.
What happens when I run out of credits?
You can still log anything already in your memory or saved meals, edit entries, and see your day as normal. New foods that need AI wait until the credits reset the next day.
Are there ads?
No. There are no ads in the app.
Can I delete my account and data?
Yes, at any time, from inside the app or by email. Access ends immediately and the data is permanently removed after a 30-day grace period. See deleting your account.
