Voice logging

A calorie tracker you can just talk to.

Hold the microphone, say “two eggs, three rotis and a cup of dal”, and let go. BetterCal transcribes it, works out every dish, and writes the whole meal into your day with calories, protein, carbs and fat.

Why it works

Why voice beats searching

Typing is already faster than a food database. Speaking is faster than typing. The gap matters most at exactly the moment tracking usually breaks down — you have just finished eating, you are holding a plate, and opening an app to run four separate searches is the last thing you want to do.

A voice log takes about as long as saying the sentence out loud. That is the entire interaction. There is no results list to scan, no “which of these nine chicken curries did you mean”, and no serving-size wheel to spin.

No special commands to learn

BetterCal is not a voice assistant with a syntax. You do not have to say “add food” or “log breakfast” or name a meal slot. You describe what you ate, in whatever words you would use with another person, and it works out the rest.

All of these log correctly:

  • “Two boiled eggs and a slice of brown toast with butter.”
  • “Rajma chawal, one bowl, and a glass of buttermilk.”
  • “Grilled chicken salad from the place downstairs, and a flat white.”
  • “Three rotis, dal, a bit of sabzi, and curd.”

One recording covers the whole meal. Several dishes in a single sentence cost one Cal Credit, not one per dish.

What happens after you stop speaking

1

Transcription

Your recording is turned into text. You can see exactly what BetterCal heard, so a misheard word is obvious rather than hidden inside a number.

2

Understanding

Each dish and quantity is pulled out separately — “three rotis” becomes a roti entry with a quantity of three, not a single mystery item.

3

Correction

Anything off can be edited in a tap, and the fix is remembered. The next time you say the same thing, it lands the way you corrected it.

Voice logging and your privacy

Recordings are used to produce your log and nothing else. BetterCal does not sell personal information, and health data belongs to you. The full detail is in the privacy policy, including which processors are involved and how long anything is kept.

Frequently asked questions

Does voice logging work offline?

No. Transcription and meal understanding both run on a server, so voice logging needs a connection. Saved meals and foods already in your memory can still be logged without one.

How many voice logs do I get for free?

Each recording uses one Cal Credit and you get 20 per day at no cost, no matter how many dishes are in the recording. Logging a saved meal again never uses a credit.

Does it understand accents and Indian dish names?

Yes. Dish names like roti, dal, poha, upma, rajma and paneer are handled as ordinary foods rather than being forced into the nearest Western database match. You always see the transcript, so anything misheard is easy to spot and fix.

Can I type instead?

Yes. The journal accepts typed entries in exactly the same plain language, and many people mix the two — voice at home, typing when they are somewhere quiet.
