Every AI calorie tracker sells the same promise: logging without the work. Most of them deliver it for about a week.

The useful question is not which app has the cleverest demo. It is which one you will still be opening in March. That comes down to a fairly small number of design decisions, and they are easy to check before you commit.

1. How many actions does one meal take?

This is the single best predictor of whether you keep using an app, and it is easy to test. Log a realistic meal — not a chicken breast on a white plate, but whatever you actually ate last night — and count the taps.

A meal with four components should not take four separate interactions. If it does, you have a database with a nicer interface, not a faster way to log.

2. Can you log after the fact?

Some apps require the food to be in front of you. That is a hard constraint dressed up as a feature.

Real life is: you eat, you talk to someone, you get up, and forty minutes later you remember the app. If logging at that point is impossible, every social meal and every rushed lunch goes unrecorded — and those are exactly the meals most likely to be large. Your data ends up systematically biased toward the days you ate alone.

3. Does it handle the food you actually eat?

Most nutrition databases are built around packaged Western food. If your meals are home-cooked, regional, or assembled rather than plated, a large database is much less useful than it sounds.

Test it with something specific to your kitchen. If the app can only offer you a stranger's approximation of a similar dish, you will be correcting it forever.

4. What happens the second time you eat something?

This is the one almost nobody checks, and it matters more than anything else on this list.

Most people rotate through a small set of meals. If logging your usual breakfast on day thirty takes as long as it did on day one, the app has learned nothing and the effort never decreases. Good tools get faster the longer you use them.

5. Do your corrections stick?

You will disagree with an estimate. When you fix it, does the app remember — or does it make the same mistake next week?

An app that learns your portions converges on your actual kitchen over a month. One that does not means you are re-editing the same dish indefinitely, which is its own kind of friction.

6. Which features are behind the paywall?

Look carefully at what the free tier actually gives you. A common pattern is to leave manual database search free and put every fast input method — voice, AI parsing, barcode — behind a subscription.

That is a deliberate design: make the free experience tedious enough that you pay to stop being annoyed. It is a legitimate business model, but know that it is what you are choosing.

7. Is it honest about accuracy?

Any app claiming precise calorie counts for home-cooked food is overselling. Estimating what is in a curry someone else cooked is genuinely hard, and the honest apps say so.

Be suspicious of confident decimal places. Be more comfortable with an app that shows you a range, explains its assumptions, and lets you correct them. Accuracy is worth less than consistency anyway — a slightly-off estimate you record every day beats a precise one you abandon.

8. Does it stay out of the way?

Streak guilt, challenge mechanics, social feeds, upsell banners, coaching prompts. Each is a small tax on opening the app, and they compound.

The tracker you keep is usually the quietest one.

The claims worth ignoring

"Millions of foods in our database." Database size only helps if you were going to search it, and searching is the thing that makes logging slow.

"99% accurate." Not for home-cooked food. Nobody is.

"AI-powered." Says nothing. Ask what it removes, not what it uses.

Before-and-after photos. These tell you about the person, not the tool.

A quick way to decide

Install it and log three days properly — including one day you eat out and one day you cook at home. Then ask yourself one question:

Did logging get faster over those three days, or did it stay the same?

If it got faster, the app is learning and you will probably keep it. If it stayed the same, you have found the reason you will quit in week three.
