How many calories in paratha?
200–300 kcal
A plain home-made paratha is usually 200–300 calories. Almost all of the spread is cooking fat: the same dough cooked dry and cooked in a tablespoon of ghee differ by well over a hundred calories.
By serving
Serving by serving.
Ranges rather than single numbers. Home cooking has no standard serving, and the same dish made in two kitchens genuinely differs by this much — a single figure would be false precision.
| Serving | Calories |
|---|---|
| 1 plain paratha (~55 g dough) | 200–300 |
| 1 aloo paratha, no butter on top | 250–350 |
| 1 laccha or restaurant paratha | 300–420 |
| Per 100 g, cooked | 290–330 |
Per one plain paratha: 5–7 g protein · 28–34 g carbs · 8–14 g fat
Why the range
What moves this number.
If you want a better estimate than the table gives, these are the things worth paying attention to. Everything else is noise by comparison.
- Cooking fat. Each teaspoon of ghee or oil adds roughly 40 calories, and a generously cooked paratha absorbs two or three. This is the single largest variable.
- Size. Parathas are rolled by hand, so a 40 g dough ball and a 70 g one both get called “one paratha”.
- Stuffing. Aloo adds mostly carbohydrate; paneer and gobi add fat and protein. A stuffed paratha is usually rolled larger too.
- Butter on top. A pat of white butter or malai after cooking is another 50–90 calories and is easy to forget you added.
Logging it
You do not need this table every day.
Looking a number up works once. Doing it for every item of every meal is the reason most people stop tracking within a fortnight.
BetterCal has no database to search. Say or type the meal the way you would describe it to a person — "paratha and dal" — and it is logged with calories and macros in one go. If your version differs from the estimate, correct it once and it remembers, so over a few weeks the numbers converge on your kitchen rather than an average of everyone else's.
Frequently asked questions
Is a paratha healthier than a roti?
A roti is lower in calories — 70–110 against 200–300 — because it is cooked with little or no fat. Neither is unhealthy; a paratha is simply a more calorie-dense way to eat the same flour.
How many calories in a paratha without oil?
Cooked dry on the tawa, a plain paratha of the same size is roughly 120–170 calories. The fat is doing most of the work in the usual figure.
How many parathas can I eat in a day?
That depends entirely on your calorie target rather than on the food. Two parathas is a normal breakfast for many people and fits comfortably inside a typical day.
Why is this a range and not one number?
Because the honest answer is a range. Serving sizes are not standardised and cooking fat varies enormously between kitchens. A single confident figure would be more convenient and less true. See how accurate calorie estimates really are.
Do I need to weigh food to track it properly?
No. Weighing improves precision that you mostly do not need — being consistently within 10% is enough to lose or gain weight predictably. The easiest way to track calories covers the method.
